Kaja Kallas: A Woman of Power

Kaja Kallas isn’t here to play games. As the EU’s new Foreign Policy Chief, she’s making it clear that Europe won’t be sidelined in decisions that shape its future, especially when it comes to Ukraine. After Trump’s call with Putin, she didn’t hold back, calling out the dangers of appeasement and emphasizing that any deal made without Europe and Ukraine is a non starter. Her leadership is a much needed shift from her predecessor, Josep Borrell, who was often criticized for being too reactive and lacking strategic direction.

Unlike Borrell, Kallas brings a principled approach to the EU’s foreign policy. She’s a strong advocate for defense cooperation, ensuring Europe isn’t just a bystander but a key player in global security. From strengthening EU NATO ties to standing firm against authoritarian threats like Russia and China, she’s shaping a Europe that’s more united and prepared than ever. And the timing couldn’t be better: EU leaders have recently committed to ramping up defense efforts in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Under this new push, the EU has launched its first ever European Defence Industrial Strategy, aimed at strengthening military readiness, promoting joint procurement, and fostering innovation in the defense sector. A €1.5 billion European Defence Industry Programme is in the works to enhance industrial capabilities, while EU countries are being encouraged to increase joint defense procurement to at least 40% by 2030, spend half their defense budgets within Europe, and boost intra EU defense trade. Discussions on funding these initiatives are ongoing, with the European Commission exploring more flexible public finance rules to support defense spending.

With defense now at the heart of the European project, Kallas’ leadership could be the driving force that cements the EU’s role as a real geopolitical power. She isn’t just reacting to crises, she’s setting a new and decisive course for Europe’s future.

Kaja Kallas isn’t backing down from either Putin or Trump. She’s been one of the strongest voices against Russian aggression, pushing for tougher sanctions, more military aid to Ukraine, and a stronger European defense. She knows that Putin takes advantage of weakness, and she’s making sure Europe stays firm. At the same time, she’s not letting Trump’s unpredictable moves shake EU unity. Whether it’s his doubts about NATO or his talks with Putin, Kallas is making it clear that Europe won’t be pushed around. She’s standing up for democracy and keeping Europe strong, no matter who tries to challenge it.
