New Lowest Birth Rate Records: Women’s Victory in Chile, Scotland, and Wales

It’s no surprise that as women wake up to the truths of patriarchy, the birth rates get lower and lower. As women refuse to give birth, new records for the lowest birth rates continue to be set in various countries. This is a great trend for women, because it means the continued flow of power away from men and towards women. A women who does not give birth is a woman that the patriarchy cannot control. Let’s look at the latest victories.

Chile’s plunging birth rate may foreshadow future in U.S. | NPR

A decade ago, Chile had a birth rate of 1.6. Now, the birth rate has dropped drastically, down to 1.1. This shows that when women begin to wake up and gain independence, they can quickly create massive shifts in society. Women know that having children is a loss of freedom. It isn’t just about the financial strain, it’s about the overall drain on life all that children bring.

“It’s not something I dream of, seeing myself as a mother; I’m just not interested”
– Florencia Contreras

“Even if I were more financially stable. I don’t think I’m cut out to be a mother. I also don’t feel like the world is a nice place to bring someone else into. I don’t like the state of the planet and the world in general.”
– Macarena Lagos

The women of Chile are a great inspiration to those of us in the United States, because the birth rate in the United States has fallen to 1.6 for the first time. This means that within a decade, we can also get the birth rates to 1.1, or even lower.

Scotland’s birth rate falls to lowest level since 1855 | BBC

The next victory comes in Scotland, where women have reduced the birth rate all the way down to 1.25. The news is even better within the largest cities. Edinburgh had the lowest birth rate at 0.99, followed by Glasgow at 1.05 and Aberdeen at 1.06. The trend is for humans to move to larger cities as birth rates fall, so the downward effect on the birth rate will compound with time as more women move to the cities and choose to abstain from childbirth.

Fertility rate in England and Wales falls for a third year | The Independent

The birth rate in Wales has reached a new record low of 1.41. Like Scotland, Wales faces problems with poverty and lack of employment opportunities. Of course, childbearing hurts women in any case, regardless if poverty is present or not. However, women often think beyond themselves, realizing that having children is bad for the child as well. There is no reason to bring a child into these dire economic circumstances.

Not Low Enough

While the birth rate is much lower than it was before in many countries, we must remember that it is not low enough. Even a birth rate of 1.0, means that on average, every woman is going through the extremely painful process of pregnancy and childbirth. Even once is far too much.

While conservative media harps on about the birth rate being too low, the only real problem is that the birth rates are still too high, far too high. At the end of it all, the only proper birth rate, is a birth rate of 0. Let the world know that it is where we are headed, and we will not stop until we get there.Fuck the patriarchy.
