This wasn’t just an act of mass violence, but a purposeful attack by men against women. Men were the perpetrators, and their targets were women from the ages of 14 to 21.

Unfortunately, this is just another happening that shows that women are not allowed to have fun or be themselves in our world.

Think about it deeply. Can women really relax and have fun? After a long week of working, they may want to go to an event that they may find exciting. But the reality is having to be constantly vigilant, avoiding dangerous men, watching drinks to make sure they aren’t spiked, and extensive planning to make it to the event and back safely.

Every women has to ward off constantly unwanted advances. They have to worry about being followed or stalked. They have to figure out how to leave situations while diffusing a man’s potential anger or violence. Women live in a constant state of mental exhaustion, due to the violent and controlling nature of men.

As long as men are around, women never get to truly relax or have fun.

The need for separatist spaces if of utmost importance. Women’s only gyms, women’s only music events, women’s only business conferences. The work is being done in some of these areas, but we are in dire need of more options.

To truly be free, women need spaces where they can fully enjoy themselves. They need spaces where no men are allowed, with no exceptions.

We have all seen those moments when women are around other women and can truly have fun. Sometimes, they are short and fleeting, as women return to broader society, or back home to boyfriends or husbands.

Let’s work to make 4B and separatism widely known, so that women can enjoy their shared moments with each other, all of the time.
